Ship Godmothers have their work cut out for them.

You watch them stand by the new ship beside the captain as they bestow a ship blessing to bring good luck and safe sails. A champagne bottle appears soon after. Then the ultimate satisfying smash of the champagne bottle against the bow sends loud cheers from the sea of anxious onlookers.

The entire crew on the sundeck waves and the primordial blows of the ship’s horn permeates the sky in a celebratory christening ceremony.

Now add the star power.

The long standing tradition of ship godmothers has been around for years. Celebrity Godmothers have been a notable favourite for many ships. There’s sweet-as-apple-pie, the late Debbie Reynolds who was the Godmother of Holland America Line’s ms Veendam. The legendary starlet of Mary Poppins Julie Andrews sprinkled her stardust on board the Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity while the TV detective Angela Lansbury of “Murder, She Wrote” fame has cast her celebrity status on board the Crystal Symphony as its Godmother.

Here’s a look at some notable Cruise Ship Godmothers:

1. MSC Bellissima “Beautiful”

Sophia Loren has been the Godmother for every MSC Cruises ship since the 2003 launch of the MSC Lirica by the company owners, the Aponte family. Sophia Loren has christened her 14th ship with MSC Cruises in March 2019 with MSC Bellissima.

Watch for more christenings. Forbes rates the cruise company as the world’s fastest growing cruise line. Another 13 ships are due to join MSC Cruises fleet by 2027.

2. Disney Fantasy
Singing diva Maria Carey is the proclaimed “Fairy Godmother” of the Disney Fantasy. The fun-filled ship which made its splashy debut with a New York City backdrop in a star-studded naming celebration back in 2012 has been a singing hit ever since.

Not bad for a cruise line whose first ship, the Magic, is Godmother Patricia Disney and the second ship to join the Disney fleet, the Wonder, is none other than Tinkerbell.

3. MS Douro Elegance

Grammy award winning singer-songwriter Joss Stone is the A-list Godmother aboard the MS Douro Elegance. The chic river vessel from Riviera River Cruises was christened at its naming ceremony in 2017 by the soulful beauty. The river cruise ship is sumptuous elegance. You can watch her ply Portugal’s fabled Douro River. Better yet, book a cruise.

4. Carnival Horizon

Carnival Horizon’s Queen Latifah poured champagne over the ship’s bell during the naming ceremony. The celeb Godmother famous for movies and rap songs like U.N.I.T.Y. announced the Horizon on the Lido Deck in May 2018. Later invited guests in a post-dinner wrap got to watch Queen Latifah in a lively Lip Sync Battle perform with her star opponent Super Bowl Champion Jake Elliott. Guess who won?
